What does tradesman insurance cover

Tradesmen insurance is a type of business insurance that provides specialised protection from the risks involved in working in a trade. Generally speaking, it will include individual insurances to cover legal fees and compensation if an employee, client or member of the public is injured or suffers property damage as a result of your work or alleges failures in your professional advice, but can include other covers too. They might include insurance for tools, vehicles, premises, plant and equipment, as well as things like personal accident and income protection cover. At NICEIC Insurance, we have worked with insurers to develop tradesman insurance solutions that are comprehensive, flexible and affordable – to make it easier for you to find the right cover at the right price.

What additional cover can my insurance include?

You can extend your electrical contractors insurance to include a range of optional extras such as employers liability and tools cover to deliver personalised insurance protection to suit your circumstances. We can also arrange other essential insurance covers, from personal accident and income protection to property and vehicle insurance.

I work in more than one trade. Can you cover this?

Yes, we offer cover for both primary and secondary trades. So, if you work mainly in one trade – for instance, as an electrician – select this as your primary, or main trade. Then, if you also work on occasion as a plumber, for example, you should choose this as your secondary trade.

Do I need public liability insurance as a contractor or tradesperson?

While public liability insurance isn't a legal requirement, it is strongly recommended for contractors and tradespeople since the nature of the job brings you into contact with clients and members of the public. That's because, no matter how careful you are, accidents do happen – and if an accident causes injury or property damage to a client or member of the public, you could find yourself faced with potentially expensive legal and compensation costs. Without public liability insurance, these costs would need to be funded from your own pocket.

Do I need professional indemnity insurance as a contractor?

If you provide advice or consultancy to clients as part of your work as a contractor, you should consider taking out professional indemnity insurance. This will cover the cost of legal fees and compensation if a client alleges a failure in your professional advice. The good news is that professional indemnity cover is included as standard in most of our contractors insurance solutions, designed to provide comprehensive, flexible cover at an affordable price.
